Box Score 2 The Middlebury softball team played two more games on Monday, facing Colby and MIT in Clermont, Florida. The Panthers suffered their first two losses of the season, moving to 4-2 with a 4-2 setback at the hands of Colby and an 8-1 loss to MIT. Middlebury is off on Tuesday before returning to action against Thomas and Carleton on Wednesday.
In the first game of the day, the Panthers battled NESCAC foe Colby. The Mules led 3-0 with three runs in the third before Middlebury struck for a pair in the bottom of the fourth inning. A walk by Kat Maehr and a single from Erin Giles got things going with a sacrifice bunt by Siobhan O'Sullivan moving runners to second and third. A fielding error and a sacrifice fly from Ali Della Volpe made it a 3-2 game.
Colby added a run in the sixth, holding the Panthers scoreless for the remainder of the game on its way to the 4-2 win.
Allison Quigley went the distance against the Mules, suffering the loss. Five players singled for the Panthers with a triple from Carlyn Vachow.
Later in the afternoon, MIT scored three runs in the top of the first, with Middlebury answering with a solo run in the bottom of the inning. Kati Daczkowski walked and later scored on a double by Vachow. MIT added solo runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-1 advantage.
The Engineers tacked on a pair in the seventh to pick up the 8-1 win. Maehr suffered the loss, tossing all seven innings. Vachow doubled, while Jackie Stern had a single.
