Softball Tops Union & Wellesley to Move to 4-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Middlebury softball team was back in action on Sunday with a pair of games played in Clermont, Florida. The Panthers (4-0) opened the day with a 5-2 win over Union (0-3) before defeating Wellesley by a 4-3 count later in the day. Middlebury returns to action on Monday when it faces Colby and MIT.

Against Union, Allison Quigley allowed just three hits and struck out six over seven innings of work to pick up the victory.

The Panthers struck for three runs in the top of the second to grab an early lead. A pair of walks and an error loaded the bases for Kati Daczkowski, who tripled in all three runners.

The lead grew to 5-0 in the fourth with two more runs. Siobhan O'Sullivan singled and stole second before moving to third on a fielder's choice from Jackie Stern. Carlyn Vachow singled in O'Sullivan, before Hye-Jin Kim plated Stern with a single.

Union scored twice in the sixth on a two-run homer, but that's as close as they'd come. Kim finished 3-4 with a double, while Vachow was 2-3.

Wellesley scored twice in the second inning to grab an early lead on the Panthers in their second game of the day.

Middlebury got on the board in the fifth as Emma Hamilton led off with a single through the right side and later scored on an error. The Blue increased their lead to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the inning.

The Panthers tied the game in the sixth inning with a pair of runs. Kim singled and moved to third on a double to right center from Kat Maehr. Sarah Freyre drove in Vachow with a single to right center, while Siobhan O'Sullivan plated Maehr with a single to left.

Middlebury held in the bottom of the inning before earning the game-winning run in the top of the seventh. Taylor Gardner led off with a single through the left side and moved to second on a passed ball. Kim reached on an error as Gardner moved to third. One batter later, Erin Giles singled through the right side, scoring Gardner for the 4-3 lead.

Wellesley threatened in the seventh with the lead-off hitter reaching. A pair of fielder's choices and a pop out ended the game as Neve Stearns picked up her second win of the season in relief.

Maehr started and went 1.2 innings before Stearns took over in the second. She tossed 5.1 innings of relief, allowing just one run, while striking out two.

Gardner went 2-4 with a double, while Della Volpe and Maehr each doubled as well.
