Aided by a quartet of school-record performances during the opening day of the 2015 NESCAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship on Friday, Middlebury sits in third place among 11 teams competing at the event being held at the Wesleyan Natatorium. Williams leads the way with 686.5 points, while Bates (541), Middlebury (469.5), Amherst (403) and Bowdoin (377.5) round out the top five.
During the day's first three events, school records fell in the 50-meter breaststroke by Jamie Hillas and in the very next event, the 50 fly, by Megan Griffin.
In the evening's first final, the 200 free relay composed of Hillas, Morgan Burke, Griffin and Courtney Haron stopped the clock with a time of 1:35.02. That mark garnered them a third-place finish and an NCAA 'B' cut.
Hillas made it three-straight titles in the 50 breaststroke, lowering her school-record mark with a pool-record time of 28.82.
Griffin eclipsed her own school record in the 50 fly during Friday's final. She touched the wall in the event with a mark of 25.34, good for a second-place finish.
The final school record was posted in the last event of the opening evening. The Panther 400 medley relay team of Sarah Bartholomae, Hillas, Griffin and Burke posted an NCAA 'B' cut time of 3:49.13, good for third place.
Other notable performances in the pool came from Burke (seventh, 24.25) and Griffin (24.35, eighth) in the 50 free. On the diving board, Adrianna Baker amassed 393.40 points during the 1-meter final and finished in fourth place.
The Panthers return for day two of the championship Saturday. Morning preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., while the finals session will start at 6:00 p.m.
