Box Score Middlebury's Sarah Kaufman scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, as the Panthers dodged a pair of game-tying attempts in the final seconds for a 60-59 NESCAC win against Hamilton at Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers (11-9, 3-3) snap a four-game skid with the win and will host Colby on Friday at 7:00 p.m., while Hamilton (10-9, 1-5) hosts Tufts on Friday at the same time.
The Panthers made all nine of their free throws and were 7-13 (53.8%) from three-point range, while Hamilton was 9-29 from beyond the arc for 31 percent.
Elizabeth Knox tied for game-high honors with 16 points. Rachel Crews chipped in 11, including a trio of three-pointers, and Alexis Coolidge added eight.
Lauren Getman tied a season-high total with 16 points and added 10 boards for her second double-double. Theresa Salud tied a career-best with 13 points, while Caroline Barrett recorded eight points and a game-high five assists. Sam Graber posted her 10th double-double this season and the 17th career with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
In the first half, Hamilton led once by a 10-9 score on a layup by Getman midway through the period. The Continentals trailed by just three points at 21-18 with 3:06 remaining, but Middlebury ended the half with a 12-4 run and enjoyed a 33-22 cushion at the break.
A three-pointer from Knox out of the locker room gave the Panthers their largest lead of the afternoon at 14 points (36-22). Hamilton responded with a 14-2 run that was capped by a Samantha Srinivasan basket from beyond the arc, bringing the Continentals to within two (38-36) with 11:07 to go.
Neither team led by more than five points the rest of the way, as a Getman three-pointer gave Hamilton a 47-45 edge with 6:42 left. The lead marked the Continentals' first advantage since they led by a 10-9 score early in the opening half.
A few minutes later, a three by Barrett gave the Continentals their last lead at 50-49 with 3:40 left. A driving layup by Coolidge put Middlebury ahead for good with 3:16 remaining. Crews drained a trifecta that made it 54-50, but Salud got those points right back with her own basket from beyond the arc with 2:07 to go. Middlebury's Sabrina Weeks connected on a shot in the paint for the visitors on the ensuing possession. After Hamilton missed a three-pointer, two free throw makes by Krystina Reynolds gave Middlebury a 58-53 advantage with 1:12 left.
On the next possession, Getman made a basket that drew the hosts to within three at 58-55 with 46 seconds remaining. Graber stole the inbound pass and fed Salud for a layup that cut the Middlebury lead to one. Reynolds was fouled with 26.9 seconds to go and made both free throws, once again giving Panthers a three-point lead (60-57).
With a little under 20 seconds remaining, Getman missed a jumper but Graber pulled down the offensive rebound and Hamilton called a 30-second timeout with 11 seconds left. The Continentals missed two three-point shots as the clock wound down before Graber's putback provided the final margin.
Both teams finished with 39 rebounds, and they combined to commit just 21 turnovers. Hamilton shot 38.3 percent (23-60), while Middlebury shot 36.1 percent (22-61).
