Women's Tennis Fares Well During Its Own Invitational

The three-day Middlebury Invitational Women's Tennis Tournament featured a quartet of teams that played a form of hidden duals from Friday through Sunday. Action took place inside both the Nelson Recreational Center as well as outdoors on the Proctor Tennis Courts. Teams competing in the invitational were Middlebury, Williams, Army West Point and Amherst.

The format for the invitational saw teams playing a dual in either singles or doubles against each other, as either six singles or three doubles matches were contested. There was no-ad scoring to help speed up action, as singles played the best two-of-three format with a tiebreaker set in the third and doubles was one pro-set.

Middlebury competed in matches against Army West Point in singles on Friday afternoon. After dropping the first set, the Panthers saw three-set victories from a trio of players. Christina Puccinelli defeated Ally Hayley (6-7 (6), 6-3, 10-3), Sadie Shackelford came back against Haley O'Connor (2-6, 7-6 (4), 10-8) and Lauren Amos bested Sera Martorelli (4-6, 7-5, 10-6).

On Saturday in doubles against Amherst, the duo of Lily Bondy and Shackelford defeated Jackie Calla and Kesley Chen, 9-8 (2). In singles play against Williams, the Ephs took five of the six matches with Middlebury's win coming from Amos in straight sets over Francesca Eluhu (6-3, 6-0).

During Sunday's singles action against Amherst, Catherine Miller picked up the sole victory for the Panthers, defeating Megan Adamo by set scores of 6-3, 7-6 (4).

Middlebury also played a trio of doubles matches on the final day against Williams, but the Ephs edged the hosts in all three.

The invitational concludes the fall portion of the season for Middlebury. The Panthers will open the spring schedule with home NESCAC dual matches on Saturday, March 12 with Hamilton at 1:00 p.m. and Bates at 5:00 p.m.
