Box Score 2 Middlebury saw its season come to an end on Saturday in the NESCAC Tournament. The Panthers topped Bowdoin by a 2-0 score in an elimination game in the morning, before falling to Williams, 8-5. Middlebury ends its season with a 19-16 mark.
In their first game of the day, Middlebury's Elizabeth Morris struck out a dozen Bowdoin batters, as the Panthers stayed alive with the win over the Polar Bears (24-14).
Middlebury's Carlyn Vachow reached on a grounder to short that squirted out of Marissa O'Toole's glove to lead off the top of the fifth inning. A sharp single to right field off the bat of Kelsey Martel that skipped under the glove of Bowdoin's Alana Luzzio allowed Vachow to score, putting Martel on third with no outs.
Martel then scored on a fielder's choice grounder to second when she beat the throw by Hannah Wurgaft to home plate. Alex Scibetta reached on the throw to the plate and later stole second base. Scibetta advanced to third base when Kimber Sable fouled out down the right-field line, but the inning ended when Jackie Stern grounded out to Emily Griffin. The Panthers' two runs came on two hits and were aided by two Polar Bear errors.
Bowdoin's Emily Griffin led off the seventh with a soft liner into left field for a single, the first hit off Morris. Morris followed by promptly striking out Nicole Nelson and Katie Gately.
With two down Hannah Wurgaft stroked a single to left field, advancing Griffin to second. Morris, however, ended the Polar Bear threat and the contest striking out Alana Luzzio.
Morris (8-4) went the first six innings without allowing a hit, but allowed two singles in the seventh inning. Emily Griffin (7-6) allowed three hits and no earned runs over seven innings for Bowdoin with five strikeouts.
In their second game of the day, Williams scored three in the first and four more in the fourth on its way to an 8-5 victory. Ali Graebner went 3-3 with two runs scored to pace a 12-hit attack for the Ephs, who advance to the finals on Sunday to face Tufts.
Williams jumped with a trio of runs in the first. Alison Michalik led off with a single and Erica Li was hit by a pitch. Graebner beat out a bunt to load the bases for Priscilla Pino, who grounded a ball to second that was misplayed, allowing two runs to score. Lindsey Precht added an RBI-single back through the circle for a three-run lead.
Middlebury chipped away, scoring a run in the bottom of the second when Hye-Jin Kim socked a solo home run to center. Kim forced home another run in the bottom of the third when she drew a bases-loaded walk from Williams starter Brooke Bovier, but Bovier escaped further damage by striking out Sarah Freyre to end the frame.
The Ephs then added four runs in the top of the fourth for a 7-2 lead. Mo Frank led off with a single and moved to second when Theresa Legan beat out a bunt for a single. Michalik followed with a double to left that scored one run. Li laid down a nice squeeze bunt to score another, and Michalik scored when a pick-off attempt hit her in the back and rolled into foul territory on the third base side. Pino capped the rally with a two-out, RBI-single to right that scored Graebner.
Trailing 7-2, Middlebury scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Emma Hamilton doubled to lead off the inning, as Bovier walked Kimber Sable and Christina Bicks to load the bases with nobody out. Emily Kraytenberg lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Hamilton, while the other two runners advanced on an overthrow. Kim's big day continued when she lashed a two-run single to center, closing the deficit to two runs, but Bovier -- with runners on second and third and two outs -- induced Kelsey Martel to ground out to second base and end the threat.
Williams added a final insurance run in the sixth when Pino drilled a double to right-center that scored Kacey Cramer for an 8-5 lead. Bovier had a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to wrap up the victory for the Ephs. She improved to 10-3 by going seven innings, allowing five runs on five hits. She walked six and struck out three.
Kim finished 2-3 with four RBI to pace the Panther offense. Morris took the loss for Middlebury, allowing 10 hits and seven runs, five earned, over five innings. She did not walk a batter and struck out five while falling to 8-5.
Michalik was 3-4 for Williams, scoring twice and driving on a run. Pino finished 2-4 with three RBI.
