Box Score
Elizabeth Morris led Middlebury to a 2-0 win over Hamilton, tossing a complete game shut-out over the Continentals. With the victory, the Panthers improve to 6-1 in the NESCAC West and 15-8 overall, while Hamilton stands at 7-17 on the season and 1-5 in conference play. The teams will play a double-header tomorrow at noon, wrapping up their three-game series.
In the home half of the second inning, Middlebury's Sarah Freyre drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch during Kelsey Martel's at-bat. Martel followed with an RBI single through to centerfield, scoring Freyre for a 1-0 lead.
Morris (6-1) pitched herself into a jam in the fourth. After hitting the lead-off batter Kelly Leonard on the wrist, she retired the next two Continentals before Sam Miller knocked a single up the middle, setting runners on first and second. Morris loaded the bases when she plunked Ellie Kiernan, but a fly-out by Becca Butler ended the threat.
Martel opened the fifth inning getting hit on the ankle by a Monique St. Jarre pitch. After a sacrifice bunt by Alex Scibetta pushed Martel to second, Martel went to third on an infield ground-out by Christina Bicks. St. Jarre allowed Martel to score from third on a wild pitch, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Hamilton had a chance to tie the game as consecutive singles by Sarah Moore and Olivia Gozdz put runners on first and second with one out. A Morris wild pitch to Miller allowed both runners to move up a base. Miller, who already had two singles off Morris, was punched-out on a check-swing, third strike for the second out. Morris followed by enticing Kiernan into a routine 5-3 put-out to end the inning.
Morris pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for the complete game victory. Morris scattered four singles and struck out five. Middlebury had only three hits in the game as Emily Kraytenberg slammed a stand-up double, Kimber Sable added a single, and Martel had an RBI single and scored a run.
St. Jarre (4-6) suffered the loss, allowing both earned runs on three hits, while also punching out five Panther batters. Miller went 2-3 with two singles, as Moore and Gozdz had the other two hits for Hamilton.
