Softball Posts 2-0 Day During Spring Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Middlebury softball team notched a pair of victories Monday during its spring break trip to Clermont, Florida. The Panthers hung on for an 11-7 victory over Lawrence (Wis.) in the morning, and scored all their runs in the latter innings of an 8-1 win against St. Catherine's. Following a day off Tuesday, Middlebury returns to the field Wednesday morning with games against R.I.T. and Elmhurst.

In Monday's first game, Lawrence jumped on the board with a single tally in the bottom of the first. Amanda Jaskolski recorded a run-scoring single plating Anna Wawiorka, who reached base via a walk.

The score remained 1-0 until the top of the third when the Panthers struck for three runs. The big blow came off the bat of Sarah Freyre who blasted a three-run homerun scoring Jackie Stern and Emily Kraytenberg.

Lawrence tacked on an unearned run in the bottom of the frame and drew to within one, 3-2. Middlebury responded with a five-run fourth inning. Highlighting the inning were two-run doubles off the bats of Kimber Sable and Freyre, as well as an RBI base hit by Kelsey Martel. The Panthers added a single run in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Stern, and tacked on two more in the top of the seventh. Sable produced her second run-scoring double of the game, while Kraytenberg singled home a run giving the Panthers an 11-2 edge.

In the final inning, the Wildcats mounted a comeback attempt with five runs on three hits and were aided by a couple Middlebury miscues. However, Kat Maehr induced a groundball with runners on that ended the threat and the game.

Sable and Freyre each went 3-4 at the plate with a combined four runs scored and eight RBI. Kraytenberg and Hannah Marks were each 2-4, while Christina Bicks was 2-3 with two runs scored.

Jaskolski went 2-4 with three RBI for Lawrence.

In the circle, Alexa Lesenskyj pitched the first 2.1 innings giving up two runs, just one earned, on two hits and a pair of strikeouts. Maehr logged the final 4.2 innings and got the win. She was charged with five runs, three earned, and struck out two.

Kara Vance took the loss for Lawrence giving up eight runs on 10 hits in 3.2 innings. Liz Barthels pitched the final 3.1 innings.

In the second game, Middlebury's Erin Giles and St. Catherine's Rachael Thompson were locked up in a pitcher's duel through three innings. In the fourth, Giles surrendered a lone homerun off the bat of Lindsey Klein. Elizabeth Morris took over for Middlebury in the circle, giving up just one hit through the final 3.2 innings.

The Panthers got to Thompson in the fourth inning with four runs on three hits and were helped by a pair of Wildcat miscues. In the inning, Morris helped her own cause with an RBI single, while Alex Scibetta had a sacrifice fly. The Panthers tacked on two runs in the fifth via a Freyre two-run homerun, and added two more unearned runs in the sixth for the win.

Freyre and Morris each had multi-hit games at the plate for the Panthers, while Morris scored in each of her plate appearances.

Giles allowed three hits with three punchouts in her 3.1 frames of work. Morris picked up the win, surrendering just one hit while striking out six. Thompson was saddled with the loss giving up eight runs, just three earned, on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
