Box Score 4 The Middlebury softball team is 2-2 after its first four games during the squad's annual spring break trip to Clermont, Florida. The Panthers opened their season on Saturday, March 22nd with a 14-3 loss to Wellesley. The Blue struck for seven runs in the first and fourth innings on their way to the victory.
Kimber Sable got the season off to a great start, belting a solo homer to left in the top of the first inning. An RBI single to left by Jackie Stern in the second plated Alex Scibetta for the team's second run. Middlebury plated its third run of the game in the fifth on an RBI single to right-center by Kelsey Martel.
Stern finished the game 2-3 with an RBI, while Kat Maehr suffered the loss over 3.2 innings of work in the five-inning contest.
Middlebury played another five-inning contest later in the day, this time coming up on the victorious side of a 10-0 decision. Following a two-run first inning against Potsdam, Emma Hamilton drove in Martel with a double to left-center after Martel tripled to start the inning.
The Panthers added four runs in the third inning with an RBI double to center from Carlyn Vachow and an RBI single to right center from Martel. A two-run single to right-center by Scibetta and a single from Hamilton drove in the final three runs in the fourth inning of the victory.
Erin Giles won her first career start, allowing just a pair of hits over four innings while striking out three. Martel and Hamilton each had a pair of hits, while Martel scored twice.
Middlebury began play on Sunday with a 7-5 win over Concordia (Wis.) in eight innings. Trailing 2-1, Scibetta singled in Hye-Jin Kim in the second inning before Concordia took a 3-1 lead in the third.
Sarah Freyre drove in Sable with a single to center in the fifth and made it a one-run game. In the top of the sixth, the Panthers took a 4-3 lead with two runs on three hits. RBI singles to left by Stern and Vachow drove in the runs for Middlebury. Concordia plated a run in the sixth to force extra innings.
The international tie-break rule went into effect in the eighth inning, as the Panthers started with Kim on second base. She was bunted to third by Martel and then scored on a pinch-hit single to right by Maehr. Christina Bicks later drove in a run on a triple, while a sacrifice fly from Sable gave the Panthers a 7-5 lead.
Concordia struck for a run in the bottom of the inning, but Middlebury held on for the 7-5 victory. Elizabeth Morris earned the win with five strikeouts over seven innings of work, while Neve Stearns earned the save. Eight different players had solo hits for the Panthers, while Freyre reached three times with a pair of walks.
The Panthers suffered a 3-1 loss in nine innings in their second game on Sunday, falling in a hard-fought battle with Wisconsin-Whitewater. The game was scoreless through seven innings, with the international tie-breaker rule going into effect in the eighth.
The Warhawks struck for a run in the eighth before Sable singled to center to plate Scibetta in the bottom of the inning to move the game into the ninth. Wisconsin-Whitewater scored twice in the inning, while the Panthers were unable to answer in the bottom of the frame.
Stearns allowed just one run over eight innings, while Erin Giles suffered the loss. Four different players had singles for the Panthers.
