Middlebury finished third overall at the 2014 NESCAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship hosted by Williams in Samuelson-Muir Pool. In a battle with Amherst for second and third place all evening, the Jeffs held on late in the evening to secure the second spot. The Ephs took home the title with 2,007 points, while Amherst (1,216.5) edged out the Panthers (1,207) for second. Bates (1,132) and Connecticut College (1,000.5) rounded out the top five.
Hillas recorded her third school record in as many days with a time of 2:20.21 in the 200 breaststroke. That mark lowered her previous school record by nearly four seconds and was an NCAA 'B' cut. During the same event, Nora O'Leary finished seventh with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 2:23.90.
Other notable efforts were posted by Morgan Burke, who placed fourth during the 100 free (53.00). After finishing eighth during Friday's one-meter diving competition, Colleen Harper dove her way to fourth during the 3-meter event (433.30).
The battle for second and third came down to the championship's final event, the 400 free relay. Trailing by 11.5 points, the Panther quartet of Burke, Hillas, Megan Griffin and Courtney Haron finished fourth with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 3:30.52, good for 52 team points. However, the Amherst relay team finished right behind in fifth (3:31.07), tallying 50 team points and hung on for second in the overall standings.
Andrea Tibbetts was recognized by the conference for accumulating a total of 287.5 points, the fifth-most by an individual over four years of championship competition.
The Panthers will have over a month off from competition before members of the team who qualify will compete at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving National Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana from March 19-22.
