Aided by a pair of school-record performances during the opening day of the 2014 NESCAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship on Friday, Middlebury sits in second place among 11 teams competing at the event hosted by Williams. The host school leads the way with 663 points, while Middlebury (472.5), Amherst (451), Connecticut College (441) and Bates (414.5) round out the top five.

During the day's first three events, school records fell in the 50-meter breaststroke by Jamie Hillas and in the very next event, the 50 fly, by Megan Griffin. Hillas defended her title in the 50 breaststroke and tied Jenny Hu of Tufts with a pool-record time of 29.10. Hillas bettered her previous school-record mark in the event by nearly seven-tenths of a second.

Griffin touched the wall in the 50 fly in 25.63 for a second-place finish. Griffin's time breaks Marika Ross' previous record of 25.76 set back in 2008.

In the evening's first event, the 200 free relay quartet of Morgan Burke, Hillas, Griffin and Courtney Haron stopped the clock with a time of 1:35.81. That mark garnered them a third-place finish and an NCAA 'B' cut. Another 'B' cut was posted in the final event as the 400 medley relay team of Andrea Tibbetts, Hillas, Griffin and Haron posted a time of 3:52.07 for third place.

Other notable performances came from Tibbetts in the 50-meter backstroke (27.03, sixth), Griffin in the 50 free (24.56, eighth) and Colleen Harper in the one-meter diving competition (381.60, eighth).

The Panthers return for day two of the championship Saturday. Morning preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., while the finals session will start at 6:00 p.m.
