Women's Tennis Fares Well During Its Own Invitational

The three-day Middlebury Invitational Women's Tennis Tournament featured a quartet of teams that played a form of hidden duals from Friday through Sunday. Action took place inside both the Nelson Recreational Center as well as the Middlebury Indoor Tennis facility. Teams competing in the invitational were Middlebury, Williams, Case Western Reserve and Army. The Panthers will have nearly two weeks off from play until they take part in the NEWITT Invitational hosted by Mt. Holyoke from October 17-19.

The format for the invitational saw teams playing a dual against each other, but there were as many as eight singles matches contested. The two teams played between three to four doubles matches, and could turn around and sometimes play a second round of doubles against different duos from the opposing team if time allowed.

Middlebury competed in matches against Case Western Reserve on Saturday. In singles action, the Panthers got wins in straight sets from Lily Bondy over Sara Zargham (6-1, 6-0), Alexandra Fields over Marianne Bonanno (6-0, 6-0) and Katie Paradies against Surya Khadilkar (6-3, 6-0). Shannon Gibbs fought back from a set down against Case's Taylor Sweeney for a 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 triumph.

The three doubles matches went in favor of the Spartans.

During Sunday's action against Army, Gibbs made it a 2-0 weekend as an individual with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Molly Prins. Jennifer Sundstrom posted a straight-set win over Aly Hall by scores of 6-0 and 6-1, while Kaysee Orozco lost the first set against Elle Taylor 6-3, but rebounded for 6-4 and 11-9 victories in the final two sets.

A total of six doubles matches took place between Army and Middlebury on Sunday. Orozco and Bondy teamed up for a narrow 8-6 win over Carolyn Pitman and Maya Parker. Gibbs and Sundstrom eased past Prins and Hall by an 8-4 score, while Orozco and Sundstrom cruised in a match with Taylor and Nancy Porter, 8-1.
