Softball Drops Game One At Williams

Morgan Simpson fired a complete-game five-hitter and Becky Sansone smacked a two-run home run Friday as Williams picked up a 4-1 win over Middlebury. The two teams play again Saturday in a twinbill beginning at noon in Williamstown.

Simpson carried a shutout into the seventh Friday, losing it on a bases-loaded groundout. Her teammates gave her a 1-0 lead in the first. With two outs, Katie Powers roped a double off the fence in left followed by an RBI single to left by Libby Copeland-Halperin.

Williams added three in the third off Panther starter Geene Constantin. Joey Lye walked and Sansone followed with a long drive to center field that cleared the fence for a two-run home run. Copeland-Halperin and Simpson followed an out with back-to-back singles, and Taryn Goodman scored the third run with a groundout for a 4-0 lead.

The Panthers threatend to make it a game in the seventh. Megan Margel led off with a single, followed by a single from Constantin. After an out, an error loaded the bases. Amelia Magistrali scored a run with a groundout to third, but Lye went into the shortstop hole to field a grounder off the bat of Brittany Burke, and her throw just nipped the runner to end the game.

Lye was 2 for 2 with a run scored for Williams. Copeland-Halperin and Simpson were both 2 for 3. Constantin took the loss for Middlebury, allowing eight hits and four runs, all earned, over four innings. She walked one and fanned two.
