Middlebury Competes At ITA's, Roche Wins Singles Title

Senior Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) captured the ITA singles championship this weekend at M.I.T. for the second consecutive season. The 64-person bracket featured the top-ranked players in New England, Roche going 6-0 en route to the tournament singles title. In the title match, Roche came away with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over her opponent from Williams. With the win, Roche earned herself an automatic bid to the 2006 ITA National Small College Championships in Florida later this month.

Junior Claire Smyser (Houston, Texas) won a pair of matches at the tournament, before falling 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16.

In doubles action, Roche/Smyser won four matches, before falling in the doubles final, 8-5. Middlebury's other doubles team of senior Emily Holick (Sudbury, Mass.) and sophomore Elizabeth Stone (Cohasset, Mass.) won a match before falling in the round of 16.
