Softball Takes Two From Wesleyan

Middlebury improved to 5-1 in NESCAC West play as they took a pair of 5-4 games from visiting Wesleyan. The Panthers move to 11-7 overall, while Wesleyan falls to 5-18, 0-6 in NESCAC play.

Middlebury trailed 1-0 in the fifth inning of game one before Tory Glowacky and Carolyn Davis each scored on two wild pitches. Jennifer Williams later had an infield single to make it a 3-1 game. Wesleyan answered in the sixth as Molly O'Connell scored three with a double to left center, to give the Cardinals a 4-3 advantage. Middlebury loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of walks and a hit batter. Katelyn Cannella walked with the bases loaded to tie the game at four, before Ellen Sargent singled to left for the game-winning RBI.

Four different players had hits on the day for Middlebury, including doubles from Glowacky and Colleen Sullivan. Marcia Whitehead went 2-4 for Wesleyan, while O'Connell drove in three. Jennifer Williams picked up the complete game win, allowing no earned runs, while Karla Hargrave suffered the loss.

Lauren Battaglia gave Middlebury a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game two with an RBI single up the middle. Dayna Yorks tied the game with an RBI single of her own in the sixth, forcing the game into extra innings. An RBI double from Vicky Russo gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead in the ninth, before Katie Hurd tied the game, driving in a run with a fielder's choice in the bottom of the inning.

The international tie-breaker rule went into place in the 10th, with each team starting with a runner on second base. Hailey Sarage had a bunt single before a two-run double from Julia Chamberlin plated both runners to give Wesleyan a 4-2 lead. Middlebury's half of the inning started the same, with a bunt single from Lily Hamburger to put two runners on base. Maura Casey singled through the right side with one out to score both runners and tie the game at four. Cannella walked before a foul-out that left runners at first and second with two outs. Sargent lifted a fly ball to center that was dropped by the Wesleyan centerfielder, as Casey scored to win the game.

Battaglia went 3-5 in the game to pace the Panthers, while Whitehead and Yorks each had two hits for Wesleyan. Brittany Burke earned the win, allowing two earned runs over 10 innings. Gaebe suffered the loss in relief.
