Women's Tennis Competes At NEWITT

The Middlebury College women's tennis team took part in the NEWITT (New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament) hosted by Amherst College last weekend. The Panthers finished in third place overall, out of 22 teams competing.

First-year player Elizabeth Stone (Cohasset, Mass.) captured the #6 singles bracket with four wins, including a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the title match. Junior Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) advanced all the way to the finals, winning three matches before falling 6-1, 6-2 in the finals. First-year player Elizabeth Emery (McLean, Va.) won a pair of matches in the #4 flight, before being eliminated 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals. Sophomore Amy Berkman (Shelburne, Vt.) also advanced to the semi's with a pair of wins, before falling 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles play, senior Maren Messing (New York, N.Y.) and first-year player Clare Burke (Summit, N.J.) advanced to the finals with three wins before being defeated 8-5 in the championship match. Sophomore Amanda Berck (Roslyn, N.Y.) and junior Emily Holick (Sudbury, Mass.) won two matches before being eliminated 8-4 in the semifinals.
