The top-ranked Middlebury field hockey team scored twice in the opening quarter, and held off a strong comeback attempt by Hamilton for a 3-1 victory. The contest was the NESCAC opener for both squads and the first Panther game of the season on Peter Kohn Field.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Middlebury looked to open the scoring with 2:21 elapsed following a penalty corner. Grace Keefe spun around a defender and rifled a shot on cage, but goalie Abby Griffin got her right foot on the ball, kicking it just wide.
- Hamilton's Claire Tratnyek windmilled a bid following an insert from Delaney Grace at the 3:25 mark, but Tratnyek's attempt sailed just right of the cage.
- The Panthers took a 1-0 edge with nearly five minutes expired. Following a scramble in front of the goal, Georgianne Defeo gained control of the ball, sending a pass to the left pipe where Caroline Segal was there to tap the ball home.
- Segal did not let up, scoring again at the 9:40 mark. Hanna Medwar sent the ball from the right edge of the circle to Segal, who deked a Continental and swept the ball into the back of the cage for the 2-0 advantage.
- The Panthers looked to tack on another tally during the 25th minute, but Lilly Brankas chance from close range was thwarted by Griffin to keep the lead at two at the break.
- Middlebury tested goaltender Kelly Janssen right out of the halftime break, looking to score with just 23 ticks off the clock. Medwar worked the ball around the circle and found Amy Griffin, whose reverse chip looked destined for the upper left corner of the cage, but Janssen batted the ball out of the air with her pad to keep the Panther lead at 2-0.
- Hamilton cut the deficit in half at the 35:39 mark. Grace insert a penalty corner that Lydon Kelley pushed through traffic in the circle. Kelley's pass found the stick of Sammy Higgins, who tucked the ball inside the right pipe to make it 2-1.
- The Continentals didn't let up, earning a penalty corner less than a minute later, but the Middlebury defense stood tall to deny any attempts.
- The Panthers had a great opportunity to increase their advantage at the 43:55 mark following a penalty corner, but Emily Stone's bid rang off the left post and ricocheted away.
- Middlebury made it 3-1 with 50:15 elapsed when Medwar received a through ball from Defeo and snuck the ball between the goalie and the left pipe.
- Hamilton had back-to-back scoring chances during the 55th minute following a corner, but goalie Izzy Redzic was able to thwart both bids.
- The Continentals had a final opportunity to score with less than two minutes remaining, but Redzic denied Kelley's shot with her pad to secure the 3-1 win.
NOTES
- The triumph was the 33rd-straight for Middlebury, as the squad improved to 70-1 over the last 71 contests on Peter Kohn Field.
- The Panthers improved to 21-4 against Hamilton in the 25th all-time meeting.
- Today's contest marked the first time the pressbox was in use, as the building rounded out a multi-year renovation at the facility, which included a state-of-the-art watering system, Poligras Platinum AstroTurf, new scoreboards and windscreens.
Middlebury is idle until Saturday, September 14 when it entertains #25 Trinity at 11:00 a.m.
