First-Half Flurry Leads Top-Ranked Field Hockey Past #19 Trinity 12-1

The top-ranked Middlebury field hockey team tallied eight goals during Saturday's first half, including five in the second quarter, on its way to a 12-1 victory over #19 Trinity at Peter Kohn Field. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers looked to strike first 2:33 into the opening quarter, but a penalty-stroke attempt from Georgianne Defeo was saved by Bantam goalie Hayley Gable diving to her right.
  • Middlebury broke through with 4:39 elapsed when a shot from the left side by Lilly Branka deflected off a Bantam defender and tucked into the left side of the cage for the 1-0 advantage.
  • The Panthers increased their lead 41 seconds later as Defeo tapped in a pass from the left side by Caroline Segal.
  • The hosts made it a 3-0 contest, as Caroline Haggerty tipped a pass that went across the crease by Branka off a penalty corner with no time left on the clock.Middlebury tallied its fourth goal 1:17 into the second frame after a penalty corner. Emily Stone ripped a shot from the left side that found space in the lower-left portion of the cage for a 4-0 lead.
  • Trinity answered with a goal 34 seconds later. Kate McManus inserted the ball to Maeve Hymovitz on the left side of the circle on a penalty corner. Hymovitz sent a shot inside the left post to pull to within 4-1.
  • The Panthers closed the quarter with four goals in a span of 9:09. Amy Griffin recorded her first tally of the season on a reverse sweep following a penalty corner, while Hanna Medwar posted a pair of markers 33 seconds apart on assists by Emma McCann.  Caroline Haggerty made it an 8-1 contest with 2:46 left in the first half, redirecting a pass from Ellie Harrison.
  • Grace Keefe and Shawna Ferraro provided strong offensive presences in the second half. Keefe scored her initial marker of the season following a penalty corner 2:49 into the fourth quarter, while Ferraro flicked a backhanded effort 1:07 later for a 10-1 lead.
  • Harrison and Megan Fuqua rounded out the offensive surge with a goal each for the 12-1 victory. 
NOTES
  • Harrison finished with a career-best four points, scoring once and assisting on three others.
  • Segal posted a career-high three assists, while Branka's three-point effort (1G, 2A) matched her single-game best.
  • Izzy Redzic earned the win with a save in 30 minutes of action, while Thea Rosenzweig and Madeline DiLemme saw playing time in front of the Panther cage.
  • Ten different players tallied a goal for the Panthers and 15 recorded a point.
  • The triumph was the 34th straight for Middlebury, as the squad improved to 71-1 over the last 72 contests on Peter Kohn Field. 
  • The programs played for the 43rd time with the Panthers owning a 34-9 record in the all-time series, winning the last four and 12 of the last 13.
Middlebury concludes its busy weekend against nationally-ranked opponents when it travels Sunday to #4 Babson for a 12:00 p.m. contest.
