The #1 Middlebury field hockey team opened the season with a 7-0 victory over Vermont State University Castleton, extending its winning streak to 32-straight triumphs.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Middlebury opened the scoring with 3:22 expired. Caroline Segal sent a pass from the endline on the right side toward the mouth of the cage where Caroline Haggerty was able to slip her shot through traffic for the 1-0 edge.
- With just over two minutes remaining in the opening stanza, the Panthers had a flurry of opportunities, but attempts by Grace Keefe and Segal were blocked by a strong Spartan defense.Â
- Amy Griffin had a great chance to double Middlebury's lead 1:26 into the second frame. The Panther spun around a defender and tried to slot the ball into the lower corner of the cage, but goalie Zoe Martin came up big with a split save to deny the attempt.
- Segal increased the Middlebury advantage to 3-0 with back-to-back tallies. The Panther collected a rebound after a blocked shot by Griffin and found the back of the goal through traffic, before later tapping in a pass from Griffin on the left post.Â
- With less than five minutes left in the half, Georgianne Defeo stepped up to the hash for a penalty stroke, but Martin got her body on the ball and denied the chance.
- Ellie Harrison one-timed a pass on the left pipe at the 26:45 mark, giving the Panthers a 4-0 lead at the break.Â
- Middlebury extended its advantage to 5-0 with 36:35 elapsed. Segal sprinted down the field and sent a through-ball to Defeo, who was poised on the post and redirected the ball into the cage.
- During the 39th minute, Keefe rifled a shot on an insert from Harrison, before Defeo tipped the ball up into the cage to make it 6-0.
- The Panthers capped the scoring at the 51:09 mark when Madaket Rzepka snuck her own rebound into the goal for the 7-0 triumph.
NOTES
- Segal tallied a pair of goals and two helpers, marking a career-high six points.
- Middlebury has claimed 14-consecutive season openers.
- Tuesday's game was the 33rd meeting between the two programs, with the Panthers improving to 27-4-2 in the all-time series.
- The shut out was Middlebury's sixth straight, as the program has not allowed a goal in 375:13. Â
