Strong Start Leads #1 Field Hockey Over Connecticut College 10-2

The #1 Middlebury field hockey team tallied five goals in Saturday's first quarter, including four in a span of 5:04, on its way to a 10-2 victory over Connecticut College at Peter Kohn Field.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers got on the scoreboard with 3:54 elapsed in the opening quarter. Georgianne Defeo tipped in a pass on the right post for a 1-0 lead. 
  • Defeo increased the lead 2:51 later, redirecting a shot by Claire McMichael into the right side of the cage for her 10th goal of the season.
  • Middlebury created another opportunity with 7:34 expired. Caroline Haggerty dribbled down the right side of the field, tucking her bid past Camel goalie Liz Winemaster for a 3-0 edge.
  • Continuing the pressure on the offensive end, Middlebury concluded the four-goal spurt when Caroline Segal muscled a shot inside the left post on a nifty feed from Hanna Medwar for the 4-0 advantage.
  • The hosts made it a 5-0 contest when Amy Griffin converted a penalty stroke, finding space in the lower-left corner with 3:36 left in the opening stanza
  • The Panthers pushed the edge to 6-0 with 5:35 gone in the second quarter when Madaket Rzepka redirected a pass from a sprinting Griffin.
  • The Camels cut into the deficit 44 seconds later following a penalty corner. Bridget McGann snuck an attempt into the left side of the goal to make it a 6-1 game at halftime.
  • Following the break, Defeo completed her hat trick at the 3:01 mark of the third frame, flipping the ball into the left side following a pass from Griffin.
  • McGann posted her second tally on the day for Connecticut College, working down the right side and blasted a shot into the lower-left corner with 7:46 showing on the clock.
  • Ellie Hughes pushed the Middlebury lead back to six (8-2), ripping a penalty stroke into the bottom-left corner of the cage for her first goal of the season with 3:55 left in the frame.
  • Haggerty scored again with 36 seconds remaining, poking in a pass by Megan Fuqua following a penalty corner for a 9-2 lead.
  • Eliza Cho capped the scoring for the Panthers, spinning around in front of the goal and lifted her shot into the goal to make it 10-2.
  • Connecticut College had one final chance with less than a second remaining on a penalty corner. Elizabeth Bonner fired a blast from the left side, but Middlebury goalie Madeline DiLemme saved the shot with her right pad to secure the 10-2 victory.
NOTES
  • Haggerty finished with a career-best five points, posting two goals and an assist.
  • Seven different Panthers recorded a goal in the win. 
  • With her three goals, Defeo has now scored in each of the last six games. 
  • Middlebury pushes its overall winning streak to 39, while the Panthers improve to 73-1 in the last 74 home contests.
  • The programs squared off for the 25th time with Middlebury winning 23 in the all-time series, including 22-straight triumphs.
The Panthers return to action next Saturday when they travel to #22 Bowdoin for an 11:00 a.m. start.
