Top-Ranked Panthers Breeze Past Colby 9-0 On Senior Day

The #1 Middlebury field hockey team tallied six goals during Saturday's opening half, cruising to a 9-0 victory over Colby on Senior Day. The Panthers posted their 42nd-straight victory, tying a program record.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury got on the board 54 seconds into the first quarter when Kelly Cooper sent a pass into the circle. Caroline Segal gathered the ball and swept her attempt into the left side of the cage for the 1-0 edge.
  • The Panthers maintained the pressure over the remainder of the stanza, doubling their lead with 10:28 expired when Hanna Medwar tapped in a pass from Georgianne Defeo.
  • Medwar struck again 2:51 into the second quarter. Ellie Hughes dribbled down the left side, centering a ball to Medwar who muscled her shot inside the left post for the 3-0 edge. 
  • Segal made it a 4-0 contest just 46 seconds later, batting a ball out of the air into the back of the goal.
  • Middlebury tacked on two more tallies before the halftime break, as Katherine Lantzy blasted a reverse sweep into the left side with 7:41 showing on the clock. Medwar completed her hat trick with 1:25 left in the stanza, spinning around to find the left side of the goal for a 6-0 lead.
  • The hosts maintained possession for a majority of the third quarter, but Colby had its best chance to score with 1:36 remaining. Casey Winslow worked her way inside the circle, chipping a shot that Panther goalie Izzy Redzic came off her line to kick away.
  • Middlebury made it a 7-0 game with 33 seconds left when Amy Griffin tucked her shot inside the right post.
  • The Panthers tallied twice in the final stanza to push their advantage to 9-0. Grace Keefe recorded a goal following a penalty corner, while Madaket Rzepka tipped in a pass on the right post with 4:01 remaining.
  • In the final minute, the Mules produced their best opportunity of the contest, but bids in quick succession by Bridget Everett were denied by the pads of goalie Madeline DiLemme for the final 9-0 score.
NOTES
  • Medwar's hat trick was the first of her career.
  • Defeo has scored at least one goal in nine-straight contests.
  • Cooper's assist signified the first point of her career.
  • The victory runs Middlebury's winning streak to 42, matching the output from October 29, 2019 through October 15, 2022.
  • The programs played for the 42nd meeting with Middlebury owning a 41-1 advantage in the all-time series and claiming a triumph in each of the last 28. 
  • The Panthers have tallied four goals or more in each of the last 11 matchups with the Mules.
Middlebury completes its home weekend on Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. contest against Endicott.
