The top-ranked Middlebury field hockey team set a school record for longest winning streak on Sunday, running the program total to 43-straight triumphs with a 7-1 victory over Endicott.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Middlebury peppered the Gulls early and often, finally breaking through with 6:43 left in the opening frame. The Panthers cycled the ball around the circle following a penalty corner before Amy Griffin rifled a shot into the cage for the 1-0 edge.
- The hosts looked to double the lead with 14:21 expired, but Katherine Lantzy's attempt toward the lower left corner was kicked away by goalie Faith Minickene.
- Middlebury continued pressuring Endicott in the second stanza, but Minickene was on fire, turning away 10 attempts.
- The lone tally of the quarter came at the 18:26 mark following a corner by Caroline Segal. The Panthers worked the ball around the circle, before Emily Stone's sweeping shot pinged off the back of the cage for the 2-0 advantage.
- With 21:57 expired, Middlebury looked to extend its lead. Claire McMichael sent a hard cross into the circle, which hit a defender and sailed into the air. Caroline Haggerty was there to bat the ball down, spin around and send a point-blank attempt on goal, but Minickene thwarted the chance to keep the Panthers at bay heading into the intermission.
- Middlebury came out of the break strong, tallying a trio of markers in the third stanza. Segal swept her shot into the cage, while Georgianne Defeo and Megan Fuqua each recorded reverse chip goals for the 5-0 lead.
- The Panthers increased the advantage with 46:08 elapsed when Griffin had a nice give-and-go with Segal before finding the back of the cage to make it 6-0.
- The Gulls got on the board nearly four minutes later. Maddy Dengler sprinted down the field with the ball, eluding several Middlebury players before finding Tori Swanson who was on the left post ready to tap the ball in for the 6-1 score.
- The Panthers tacked on a final tally with just under a minute to go as Ellie Harrison made it 7-1.
