Game Recap: Field Hockey |

#1 Middlebury Holds Off Endicott 4-1 For 20th-Straight Triumph

The top-ranked Middlebury field hockey team scored twice in the second quarter, and powered through a strong Endicott defense to earn a 4-1 triumph in its final non-conference game of the regular season. The win was the 20th straight for the Panthers, while the squad has claimed 26-consecutive road victories.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Gulls struck first, taking a 1-0 edge with 3:21 elapsed following a penalty corner. Abby Antonelli fired a shot from the top of the circle that Maddy Dengler tapped in on the right post for the early lead.
  • Middlebury responded just over a minute later. Katie George stole the ball from an Endicott defender around midfield and sprinted into the circle. George laid the ball off to Audrey Lazar on the right pipe who dove to sneak the ball into the goal to knot the contest 1-1.
  • With 16:51 expired, the Panthers looked to take the lead, but Amy Griffin's attempt from point-blank range sent goalie Alexis DeMattia into a split before padding away the loose ball.
  • Middlebury took a 2-1 edge at the 19:11 mark. Caroline Segal inserted a penalty corner that Ellie Hughes stopped, before Hughes' blast from the top of the circle bounced through traffic and into the cage.
  • The Panthers increased their advantage less than two minutes later. George and a Gull defender battled for possession in the circle before the ball popped out and Segal used a reverse chip to slot the ball into the lower-right corner to make it 3-1.
  • Endicott nearly cut the deficit down during the 27th minute following a penalty corner, but Middlebury goalie KK Newton was up to the task, stopping a trio of attempts. Charlotte Marks recorded a defensive save to halt the shooting frenzy and keep the Panther lead at two (3-1) heading into the break.
  • The Panthers had a pair of quality scoring chances in the early goings of the third quarter. With 33:51 on the clock, Lazar worked the ball around a defender, but her shot was kicked away by DeMattia. During the 38th minute, DeMattia stopped three Middlebury shots, including the final attempt that the Gulls' goalie laid down to thwart with her body.
  • With just under three minutes remaining in the contest, Griffin made it 4-1 with a reverse shot into the upper-left corner from just inside the circle.
NOTES
  • The Panthers' current winning streak (20) is tied for the third-longest in program history.
  • Middlebury and Endicott played for just the second time in field hockey.

The Panthers remain on the road next weekend, traveling to #24 Trinity on Saturday and Connecticut College on Sunday.
