Game Recap: Field Hockey |

George’s Hat Trick Leads #1 Panthers Past #21 Bantams

The top-ranked Middlebury field hockey team held off several strong surges from #21 Trinity, scoring twice in the final five minutes to earn a 6-2 victory. Katie George tallied a hat trick during the win, moving into sixth place on the Panthers' all-time goals list with 59 tallies.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury opened the scoring with 3:41 expired when George redirected an initial blast by Lilly Branka into the bottom-right corner for the early 1-0 edge.
  • The Panthers made it 2-0 with 17:35 showing on the clock. Amy Griffin worked the ball around the right side of the circle to the goal line extended, sending a pass to George who redirected the ball into the cage.
  • The Bantams had four-straight penalty corners in the final minute of the half. Their best chance came on the third attempt when Katrina Winfield batted the ball out of the air and into the cage, but the official negated the goal and Middlebury maintained its 2-0 lead heading into the break.
  • Trinity cut the deficit in half at the 35:06 mark. Jackie Frank sent the ball from the top of the arc to Winfield in the middle. Winfield made a move around a defender and slipped the ball into the lower-right corner of the cage to make it 2-1.
  • The Panthers responded less than a minute later when Sadie LeStage sent the ball from the endline to Caroline Segal, who snuck her one-timer into the goal to extend the advantage back to a pair (3-1).
  • With just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter, the hosts had a pair of chances to score. Winfield pressured a Middlebury defender, stole the ball in the circle, spun around and fired a shot that rang off the left pipe. A penalty stroke was awarded to the Bantams, but Izzy Deveney's attempt hit the crossbar.
  • Branka gave the visitors some breathing room at the 43:14 mark with a sneaky play. The Panther carried the ball toward the left side of the goal, forcing McMichael to charge off her line, before Branka snuck the ball between McMichael and the pipe to make it 4-1.
  • Trinity cut the deficit in half (4-2) with just over 10 minutes remaining. Frank sent the ball across the goal mouth and Winfield was on the left post to tap the ball into the goal.
  • Middlebury added a pair of insurance tallies with just under five minutes to go. George completed her hat trick with a one-timer on a feed from Hanna Medwar, while Griffin converted a stroke for the 6-2 victory.
