Top-Ranked Field Hockey Cruises Past #22 Trinity 6-1 In Quarterfinal Action

The #1/top-seeded Middlebury field hockey team rushed out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and didn't look back, opening the 2023 NESCAC Tournament with a 6-1 over #22/eighth-seed Trinity. With the victory, the squad will host the remainder of the tournament next weekend.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury got on the scoreboard with five minutes elapsed in the opening stanza. Caroline Segal controlled a pass in the middle of the arc and flipped the ball to the far post, where Katie George tapped it in for a 1-0 edge.
  • The Panthers nearly took a two-goal edge 1:26 later. Amy Griffin fired a backhand shot that was headed toward the top-left corner, but Bantam goalie Olivia McMichael made a sensational save with her right pad to deny the bid.
  • Middlebury took a 2-0 lead at the 9:02 mark. Audrey Lazar raced down the right flank, weaving through multiple Trinity defenders before clipping her shot into the left corner of the cage from a tight angle to complete a superb solo effort.
  • With 2:14 left in the first quarter, the Panthers added another tally. Griffin pounced on a loose ball in front of the goal and blasted a reverse sweep into the upper left 90 from close-range to make it 3-0.
  • Trinity responded with a tally at the 19:59 mark. Following a penalty corner, Harper Siemens fired a pass to Demi Janis who redirected her effort into the goal to make it 3-1 heading into the halftime break.
  • Middlebury restored its three goal advantage (4-1) after seven minutes of play in the third stanza. Griffin fired a low drive from the top of the arc that beat McMichael and nestled into the bottom left corner.
  • The Panthers continued to add to the lead, making it 5-1 just over a minute later. Hanna Medwar redirected an initial bid by Lilly Branka, slipping the ball over McMichael's right shoulder and into the cage.
  • Griffin completed her hat trick at the 52:16 mark. Caroline Haggerty rifled an effort that was blocked, but Griffin was first to react and smashed the ball past McMichael to secure the 6-1 triumph.
NOTES
  • With a goal today, Lazar has registered 100 career points.
  • Griffin's hat trick was the third of her career and her first this season. The midfielder has now scored at least one tally in nine-straight contests.
  • The Panthers extend their winning streak to 25-consecutive games, and are 67-1 in their last 68 matches on Peter Kohn Field.
  • The programs played for the 42nd time, with Middlebury owning a 33-9-0 mark. The Panthers are 17-2 against Trinity since 2011.
