The #1/top-seeded Middlebury field hockey team eased past #12/seventh-seeded Amherst 4-1 in NESCAC Semifinal action, advancing to the title game for the sixth-consecutive season.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Just over a minute into the game, Middlebury had a great chance to score. Sadie LeStage dribbled through the circle to the end line and sent a pass back to Audrey Lazar, but Lazar's attempt was denied by a great pad save from Mammoth goalie Grace Puchalski.
- The Panthers got on the board with just eight seconds left in the opening quarter. Katie George weaved around three Amherst defenders and sent the ball to Caroline Segal whose initial shot was denied by Puchalski. George was on the pipe to slip in the rebound to make it 1-0.
- The Mammoths had a great opportunity to deadlock the contest during the 21st minute after a penalty corner. Kate Smith inserted the ball and Kat Mason blasted a shot on cage, but Middlebury goalie KK Newton kicked away the chance.
- Amherst nearly scored with 23:45 elapsed following another corner. Molly Donegan inserted the penalty corner to Justine Ligouri whose hard shot hit the back of the wood, but the officials waved off the goal.
- The Panthers made it 2-0 with just under two minutes remaining in the half when George redirected a shot by Segal.
- Middlebury doubled its advantage during the third stanza. With 33:59 on the clock, an initial shot by Lilly Branka rang off the pipe, but Segal was there to tip the ball into the cage. At the 44:08 mark, an initial shot by Charlotte Marks was thwarted by Puchalski, creating a scramble in front of the goal, before Hanna Medwar was able to slip the ball into the cage for the 4-0 lead.
- The Mammoths spoiled the shutout just 39 seconds later. Smith inserted a penalty corner, Anna Aiello stopped the ball and Muffie Mazambani rifled a shot into the backstop to make it 4-1.
- The fourth quarter was evenly played with few chances for either team to score. Amherst had a final chance to cut the deficit with just under four minutes remaining. Kat Mason dribbled into the circle and sent a reverse chip toward the cage, but Newton was up to the task, denying the chance and securing the 4-1 triumph for Middlebury.
NOTES
- With two goals today, George moved into a tie for third place on the Panthers' all-time goals list with 66.
- Middlebury is now 68-1 in the last 69 games on Peter Kohn Field.
- The Panthers are riding a 26-game winning streak dating back to 2022.
Middlebury is seeking the program's 10th NESCAC Title and sixth straight, competing in the championship contest on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
