Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Middlebury Sets New Program Record with 38th-Straight Win

The slick, wet conditions were no problem for the #1 Middlebury field hockey team, as the Panthers defeated Wesleyan by a score of 7-0. The victory was the 38th-straight triumph, setting a record for the program's longest unbeaten streak.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • With 4:30 remaining in the first quarter, Wesleyan had its first big chance of the game. Helen Deretchin fired a shot from the top of the circle, but Middlebury goalie Grace Harlan denied the strike with her pad.
  • The Panthers produced the opening goal at the 13:51 mark. Following a penalty corner, Amy Griffin saw her initial shot saved by Cardinal goalie Audrey Pace. Griffin recovered the rebound and dished the ball to Meg Shelburne, who beat Pace and broke the deadlock.
  • Middlebury doubled its advantage just 30 seconds later. The Panthers quickly broke away on the counter as Audrey Lazar drove down the right side of the field and into the circle, cutting a pass back to Grace Murphy, who swept the ball into the bottom-right corner of the cage for a 2-0 lead.
  • Middlebury tallied its third goal of the contest with 13 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Griffin fired a long distance effort on frame. Pace was able to get a pad to it, but wasn't able to keep it out, as the ball trickled over the goal line.
  • Lilly Branka tucked home the Panthers fourth goal with just over four minutes gone in the third quarter. Lazar inserted the ball on a penalty corner, which was controlled by Katie George. Working in a crowd of defenders, George managed to find Branka, who directed the ball through a host of players and into the cage.
  • The Panthers increased their advantage again after 10 minutes of play in the third stanza. Griffin's shot was blocked into the air. Branka reacted first, controlling the loose ball and driving a low shot into the bottom-right corner for a 5-0 lead.
  • Fourth quarter goals from Ellie Hughes and a penalty-stroke goal from Lilly Thieberg with four minutes to go gave the Panthers a 7-0 victory.
NOTES
  • With the victory today, the Panthers recorded their 38th straight win, breaking the program's unbeaten record of 37 (1971-1975).
  • Middlebury increased its winning streak against Wesleyan to 22-straight games.
  • Griffin has tallied at least one point in four-straight games and seven of the last eight contests.
