No. 5 Women Knock Off Top-Ranked Emory, Defeat Conn. College

The Middlebury women's tennis team wrapped up a successful home weekend with a pair of impressive victories on Sunday. The fifth-ranked Panthers knocked off top-ranked Emory and handed the Eagles their first loss (13-1) with a 6-3 victory, before easing past Connecticut College in NESCAC play, 9-0. Middlebury, which improves to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the league, returns to action Saturday when it hosts No. 7 Tufts in conference action at 10:00 a.m.

Against Emory in the day's first match, Middlebury notched all three points during doubles play. The No. 2 tandem of Katherine Hughes and Skylar Schossberger defeated Emma Cartledge and Daniela Lopez by an 8-2 score. The Panther team of Heather Boehm and Ann Martin Skelly posted an 8-4 win against Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and Defne Olcay in the top flight, while the No. 3 pair of Christina Puccinelli and Maddi Stow were victorious by an 8-7 (9) tally over Christina Watson and Stephanie Taylor.

In singles, the Eagles moved to within 3-1 behind a win atop the lineup, before the hosts reeled off a trio of consecutive victories. Schossberger earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4 over Lauren Yoon, while Puccinelli clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph against Olcay in the third spot. Boehm made the score 6-1 via a 6-1, 6-4 win over Lopez at No. 2.

The Eagles posted wins at No. 6 and No. 5 for the final 6-3 score.

In the match against Connecticut College (8-6, 0-4), the Panthers surrendered just seven games in the trio of doubles wins. Boehm and Skelly won 8-1 at No. 1 over Mariah Warren and Brooke Scully, while Emily Bian and Nora Dahl posted an 8-2 victory in the third flight against Allison Falvey and Stephanie Simon. Puccinelli and Stow were 8-4 victors in the second spot over Meredith Kenny and Skylar Morgan.

Middlebury recorded straight-set wins in each of the individual matches, surrendering just 11 games in total. Stow was victorious at No. 4 (6-0, 6-0) over Rachel Weiss, Hughes blanked Simon at No. 2 (6-0, 6-0), while Schossberger eased past Scully in the third spot (6-2, 6-0).

Bian defeated Morgan in the fifth flight (6-2, 6-1), while Boehm was victorious by 6-1, 6-2 scores against Emily Migliorini in the No. 1 position. Ruhi Kamdar rounded out the scoring with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Paige Braithwaite at the bottom of the lineup.
