Special Teams Power #7 Panthers Past UMass Boston

Box Score

Middlebury netted three power-play goals and killed off three shorthanded situations, as the Panthers collected a 4-0 shutout over UMass Boston Saturday in Kenyon Arena. Seventh-ranked Middlebury (8-1-3) returns to NESCAC action Friday for a two-game set at Bowdoin, while the Beacons (6-8-2) remain on the road Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Colby.

UMass Boston had the best scoring chance in the opening portion of the first period, as Bri Colucci redirected a shot from the point at the top of the crease. Middlebury goalie Anna Goldstein turned the bid aside, keeping it a scoreless contest two minutes short of the midway point. The hosts grabbed a 1-0 lead with 7:46 left in the frame on a nice tip in by Morgan Griffin on a shot from the point by Elise Park. The tally was Griffin's first as a Panther. The hosts almost scored again less than two minutes later when Madie Leidt rang a shot off the left post.

Special teams dominated play in the second period with Middlebury getting four chances on the power play and UMass Boston one abbreviated opportunity. The hosts scored on the initial power play, as Eva Hendrikson worked her way in from the right point and fired a shot into the upper-right corner of the net at the 3:39 mark for her second goal in as many days. Leidt had a chance on a fourth Panther advantage, but Beacon goalie Caty Flagg made a nice shoulder save on a shot headed in under the cross bar from point-blank range.

The hosts closed out the victory with two power-play goals in the final 20 minutes. Katarina Shuchuk tucked home a rebound off the end boards on a blast from the point by Anna Zumwinkle. The goal came with the Panthers on a 5-on-3 advantage just 1:33 into the frame. Zumwinkle put the finishing touches on the 4-0 win, as her shot from the high slot at the 8:27 mark found the back of the net with Middlebury on the power play.

Goldstein (five saves in 48:27) and Caroline Silk (three saves in 11:33) combined on the shutout, while Flagg finished with 45 saves on 49 shots against.
