Alpine Concludes Opening Weekend of Racing

Week one of the 2019 carnival season is in the books with Middlebury taking home third-place honors at St. Lawrence. UVM won the event with 895 points, followed by Dartmouth (865) and the Panthers (771). Alpine events took place at Whiteface, while nordic races were held at Mt. Van Hoevenberg. Middlebury is back in action next weekend at the UNH Carnival.

The Middlebury alpine team concluded its portion of the St. Lawrence Carnival on Saturday at Whiteface, while the nordic squad got underway at Mt. Van Hoevenberg. Middlebury is currently in third place with 567 points, with Dartmouth (684) leading and UVM (628) second. Action concludes on Sunday with nordic races in Lake Placid, New York.

Annika Landis opened her carnival season with a great finish, posting a career-best second-place effort in the 5K classic in 15:44. Alexandra Lawson also earned her best collegiate finish, placing seventh overall with a time of 16:12. Rounding out the team's scorers was Avery Ellis, who came in 25th overall (16:45) to help her squad place second.

On the men's side, the top-three Panthers finished in a pack, owning eighth, 10th and 11th places for a second-place team finish. Peter Wolter paced the group, finishing the 10K classic in 27:42. Sam Wood was next in 10th (27:54), while Lewis Nottonson was 11th (27:56).

In the giant slalom event, Caroline Bartlett was Middlebury's top finisher, coming in with a two-run time of 2:19.20 to place fourth overall. Next across the line for the Panthers was Lexi Calcagni, whose time of 2:22.16 put her in 12th place overall. Rounding out the team's point scorers was Madison Lord, who finished 16th in 2:23.37.

The Panther men were paced by Tim Gavett, whose time of 2:11.90 placed him fourth overall. Erik Arvidsson was Middlebury's next finisher, coming in ninth-place overall in 2:13.27.  Earning a top-20 finish was Max Stamler, who rounded out the group with a time of 2:14.90.
