The fifth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team fell to No. 2 Williams (10-0, 1-0) by a 5-4 score in NESCAC action. The matchup was contested in the Lansing Chapman Rink. The Panthers (7-2, 2-1) have a week off from action until they host No. 14 Bowdoin next Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
The Ephs grabbed two of the three points during doubles play. Williams posted an 8-3 victory in the second spot, followed by an 8-4 triumph in the top flight. At No. 3, the Panthers earned their point when Christina Puccinelli and Heather Boehm came back from down 5-2 for a 9-7 victory over Giulia McDonnell Nieto del Rio and Emily Zheng.
In singles action, the Panthers leveled the match at 2-2 when Catherine Blazye claimed a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 4 against Chloe Henderson. The Ephs moved out to a 4-2 advantage with straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 1, respectively.
Middlebury pulled to within 4-3 when Boehm earned her 14th-straight win as an individual. She lost the first set at No. 3 to Leah Bush, but rebounded to claim the second, 6-4. Boehm picked up the win when Bush was forced to retire before the third set began.
Williams claimed the fifth team point and the match with a triumph at No. 5. Maddi Stow rounded out the scoring with her sixth-consecutive victory, posting a 7-5, 6-4 win over Julia Cancio at the bottom of the lineup.
