The Middlebury women's tennis team remained unbeaten during its spring break trip to California, knocking off Azusa Pacific (10-6), Division II's seventh-ranked team, by a 7-2 score on Monday. The match was contested at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex. The Panthers (5-0) have two days off before returning to action Thursday with a 1:00 p.m. match against Westmont at Pomona-Pitzer.
Middlebury jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles. Catherine Blazye and Maddi Stow posted an 8-4 victory over Courtney Page and Mikayla Rinker at No. 2, while Heather Boehm and Christina Puccinelli doubled the Panther advantage via an 8-4 triumph against Diana Baumgartnere and Kara Hinton in the third spot. The Cougars got on the board with a narrow 8-7 (3) victory from Toby Miclat and Petra Ivankovic against Katherine Hughes and Skylar Schossberger at No. 1.
In singles play, Azusa Pacific tied the match at 2-2 when Miclat, Division II's seventh-ranked player, defeated Hughes by scores of 6-2, 6-2.
The Panthers claimed the final five matches to finish en route to the victory. Stow gave Middlebury the lead for good with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the bottom of the lineup against Hinton, while Boehm claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 over April Wong.
Blazye clinched the match when she posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 3 over Baumgartnere. Puccinelli made it 6-2 in favor of the Panthers with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the second flight against Ivankovic, Division II's 11th-ranked player, while Schossberger concluded the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 triumph over Jackie Resler in the fifth spot for the final 7-2 score.
