In a battle of top-10 teams on Saturday, the ninth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team tallied a 6-3 NESCAC home victory over #3 Williams (7-4, 1-1). The match was played inside the Nelson Recreational Center. The Panthers (5-3, 2-0) return to action Sunday with a 2:00 p.m. home league match against seventh-ranked Tufts.
The hosts jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. In the top spot, Williams' Hannah Atkinson and Chloe Henderson edged Middlebury's Skylar Schossberger and Katherine Hughes by an 8-4 score. The Panthers responded with an 8-5 victory from Kaysee Orozco and Catherine Blazye over Juli Raventos and Linda Shin. Middlebury gained the momentum entering singles play via an 8-6 triumph at No. 3 by Alexandra Fields and Christina Puccinelli against Julia Cancio and Emily Zheng.
In singles, the Panthers claimed five of the six points. Fields dropped the opening set against Leah Bush in the top spot, but rebounded for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory and a 3-1 Middlebury advantage. At No. 4, Blazye also lost the opening set to Mia Gancayco, but bounced back with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 win.
The Panthers clinched the match when Puccinelli posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Raventos at No. 2, giving the hosts a 5-1 lead. Atkinson scored the second point for the Ephs with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Molly Paradies at No. 5.
Heather Boehm recorded the sixth point for Middlebury with a 6-1, 5-7, 10-5 victory over Shin in the third slot, while Cancio tallied point number three for Williams with a 2-6, 6-2, 10-8 win against Schossberger at No. 6.
