The third-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team started its busy weekend of home contests with a 9-0 victory Friday afternoon over #22 MIT (12-7). The match took place inside the Nelson Recreational Center due to wet weather. Middlebury (9-3), winners of six straight, returns to action on Saturday with a 10:00 a.m. NESCAC match against Trinity.
The hosts started things by notching all three points during doubles play. The No. 1 tandem of Kaysee Orozco and Catherine Blazye posted an 8-0 victory over Dora Tzeng and Kelly Zhu. The Panther team of Maddi Stow and Katherine Hughes doubled the lead with an 8-2 win in the third flight against Rena Liu and Effie Jia, while the No. 2 pair of Alexandra Fields and Christina Puccinelli were victorious 8-1 over Sonya Das and Serena Le.
In singles, the Panthers cruised in straight sets during all six wins. Fields breezed by Tzeng at No. 1 (6-0, 6-0), while Puccinelli clinched the match in the second spot with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Zhu. Blazye eased to a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 4 against Le, while Heather Boehm made the score 7-0 in favor of the hosts with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Das at No. 3.
Stow recorded a 6-3, 6-0 win against Liu at No. 6, while Molly Paradies closed out the sweep with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Sharlene Song in the fifth flight.
