Box Score Middlebury's Brandon Reid scored the game's only goal midway through the second half, as the Panthers netted a key 1-0 NESCAC triumph over visiting Trinity on Saturday. The win was Middlebury's third-straight victory by a 1-0 score. The Panthers (9-4-0, 4-4-0) travel to Bates Saturday for an 11:00 a.m. start, while the Bantams (3-9-1, 1-7-1) host Eastern Connecticut State Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
Chances for both teams were limited in the opening 45 minutes, with neither squad directing a shot on goal. Middlebury had the best chance on set piece along the right sideline. Drew Goulart served the ball into the Bantam penalty area, where Kyle Moffat poked a shot high of the net from point-blank range.
In the second stanza, the hosts nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 60th minute on a free kick from the top of the Trinity penalty area. Goulart rolled a short pass to Ben Potter, who laced a shot on goal that keeper Mateo Zabala punched over the cross bar. Two minutes later, Reid netted his second goal of the season. The Panther settled a pass from Goulart in the top-left corner of the penalty area, took a step and fired a shot into the upper-right corner with 28:14 showing on the clock.
Middlebury nearly doubled its lead with just over eight minutes remaining, but Zabala made a diving stop going to his right on a scoring bid from Potter to keep the final at 1-0.
Panther keeper Jeremy Yeager made two saves, earning his NESCAC-leading seventh shutout of the season. Zabala had four stops for the Bantams, as Middlebury held a 12-6 advantage in shots.
