The Middlebury cross country teams swept the Vermont State Championship meets hosted by St. Michael's College on Friday afternoon. The eighth-ranked Panther women earned 26 points in the seven-team meet, 34 points better than second-place Norwich. The men concluded the seven-team race with 18 points and five of the first six places, besting second-place Norwich by 33 points. Other members of the respective teams will run tomorrow at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh.
The women's team secured five of the top-10 spots during the 6K event. Read Allen led the field of 70 runners, taking home the individual title with a time of 23:41.8. Finishing in fourth place during her first collegiate start was Julia Jaschke in 24:22.1, while a spot behind Jaschke in fifth was Talia Ruxin (24:32.6). Katie Merrick posted a time of 24:43.8 for seventh place, while Claire Gomba rounded out the scorers with a 10th-place time of 25:00.02.
Sam Klockenkemper brought home the individual crown for the men's squad, covering the 8K course in 25:57.7. Nathan Hill crossed the finish line with a runner-up effort of 26:09.9, while Jack Litowitz stopped the clock in fourth place (26:18.8). Theo Henderson was right behind Litowitz in fifth (26:20.6), while Benjamin Hill completed the Panther men's scorers in sixth place (26:22.5).
