In a battle of top-15 teams, seventh-ranked Middlebury utilized strong singles play on its way to a 5-4 NESCAC victory over #14 Tufts in women's tennis action. The Panthers (6-3, 4-1) have a few days off before returning home to host top-ranked Emory on Friday at 12:00 p.m.
The Jumbos (7-3, 3-1) tallied wins in two of the three doubles matches. Middlebury's Alexandra Fields and Christina Puccinelli were the first off the court at #3 with an 8-2 win over Tomo Iwasaki and Zoe Miller. Tufts tied the match at 1-1 when Conner Calabro and Otilita Popa posted an 8-5 victory in the #2 spot over Lily Bondy and Sadie Shackelford. Tufts' Lauren Louks and Mina Karamercan gave the hosts the smallest of leads when the pair recorded an 8-4 win over Middlebury's Ria Gerger and Kaysee Orozco.
In singles, the Panthers claimed the match with four-straight victories. Molly Paradies was the first to finish, tying the match at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Miller at #5. Bondy recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win at #3 over Calabro, while Gerger eased by Louks in the top spot by set scores of 6-3, 6-4.
Ahead by a 4-2 count, Middlebury clinched the team win with Puccinelli's 6-3, 7-6 (0) victory over Iwasaki in the fourth slot. The final two points to come off the courts went in favor of the Jumbos. Chelsea Hayashi defeated Orozco (6-4, 6-2) in the #6 flight, while Karamercan needed three sets to get by Fields (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) in the second spot of the lineup.
