Alpine Teams Compete in Friday Night Action at NCAAs

Middlebury finished 11th among 21 teams competing at the 2016 NCAA Skiing Championships hosted by the University of Colorado. The Panthers finished with 133 points, while Denver captured its 23rd title with 567 points. Colorado (491), Utah (485) and Montana State (406) rounded out the top teams, with Vermont (310) leading all east squads.

The slalom event took place on Friday night, with five Middlebury athletes competing at Howelsen Hill. The men's alpine squad was led by Colin Hayes, who finished 18th overall among 34 racers in the slalom, crossing the line in 1:26.42. Riley Plant and Rob Cone struggled with the course, placing 28th (1:28.91) and 30th (1:31.98) respectively. Erik Read of Denver won the event with a two-run total of 1:24.66.

On the women's side, Caroline Bartlett and Lexi Calcagni represented the Panthers in the 34-person race. Bartlett crossed the line with a two-run time of 1:40.50 to place 26th overall. She improved her first-run place by 11 spots during the second trip down the slope. Calcagni finished 31st overall in the event, coming in with a time of 1:52.90. Julie Flo Mohagen of Utah was the winner with a time of 1:29.63.
