The Middlebury alpine teams returned to action on Friday, competing at Sugarloaf in the Colby Carnival. The Panther men and women both placed fourth in the giant slalom event, sitting in third place overall after day one. Action resumes on Saturday with the slalom events, as well as the men's and women's 15K classical races at the Quarry Road Recreational Area in Waterville.
The Panther men placed three finishers in the top 12 during the giant slalom race. Colin Hayes led the pack in sixth place, owning a two-run time of 2:03.05. Two spots back in eighth was Riley Plant, who turned in a big second run to earn a time of 2:03.29. Christopher McKenna also had a fast second run, placing 12th overall with a time of 2:03.56.
Caroline Bartlett turned in the best finish of her young collegiate career, placing fourth overall in the giant slalom with a time of 2:07.58. Fellow rookie Lexi Calcagni took home 13th place in the event, crossing the line with a two-run total time of 2:09.37. Middlebury's third scorer was Elle Gilbert, who placed 22nd overall in 2:13.24.
