Box Score After Middlebury tied the game with 13:02 remaining, Amherst scored with 15 seconds left to pick up a 2-1 win in a NESCAC contest played in Massachusetts. The 18th-ranked Jeffs remain undefeated at 4-0, 3-0 in the league, while the Panthers move to 1-1-1 overall, 0-1-1 in NESCAC play. In a hard-fought contest, neither team was able to get on the board in the first 45 minutes of action despite nine total shots between the sides.
The home team's best offensive chance of the half came eight minutes into play when Rubii Tamen collected a pass from Megan Kim and rifled a shot on net from just outside the box that forced Panther netminder Kate Reinmuth to make a diving save to her left.
With just over a minute left in the half, Middlebury's Emma Shumway nearly gave her team the advantage, finding the ball in a skirmish in front of the Amherst net and sending a shot toward goal that went just wide.
The Purple & White broke the 0-0 deadlock in the 58th minute when Hannah Guzzi tallied her team-leading third goal of the season. Gathering the inbound corner kick, Hester sent a pass to Guzzi at the top of the box who blasted a low hard shot past the Panther keeper.
Middlebury evened the score 20 minutes later. After a shot by
Katherine Hobbs forced Holly Burwick off her feet to make the save, Shumway raced past the Amherst backline and drilled the rebound into the back of the goal.
With 17 seconds on the clock and the game appearing to be headed into overtime, a well-placed ball by Rachael Abernethy down the right sideline met the feet of Emily Hester, whose shot from just inside the box beat Reinmuth to her right.
Amherst held the advantage in both shots and corner kicks, 15-9 and 8-5, respectively. Reinmuth was credited with five saves for the Panthers in the matchup, while Burwick registered five stops in the winning effort.
