The sixth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team fell in the NCAA Quarterfinals by a 5-1 score to second-ranked Emory in Mason, Ohio. The Panthers finish their season with an 11-7 record, while the Eagles will play the winner of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Carnegie Mellon in Tuesday's national semifinal.
Monday's NCAA quarterfinal match between Middlebury and Emory marked the ninth meeting in the all-time series that started in 2005 between the programs. The teams met the last time the Panthers were in the NCAA quarterfinal round, as Emory earned a 5-2 victory in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Middlebury's victory came on April 13, 2012 in a 5-4 win at home.
Emory held a 2-1 advantage after doubles play against the Eagles. Katarina Su and Bridget Harding put Emory on the scoreboard with an 8-1 win at #2 over Kaysee Orozco and Jennifer Sundstrom. The Panthers evened the match at 1-1 after Ria Gerger and Lily Bondy posted an 8-4 victory over Michelle Satterfield and Anna Fuhr in the top slot. The Eagles took the lead when Rebecca Siegler and Melissa Goodman edged Alexandra Fields and Lauren Amos by an 8-6 tally in the third slot.
After moving indoors due to a pair of lengthy weather delays, Emory made it a 3-1 match in singles play after Madison Gordon topped Katie Paradies at scores of 6-1, 6-1 in the #6 spot. Shortly after that, the Eagles grabbed a 4-1 lead when Harding recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the fifth slot over Margot Marchese.
Emory clinched the decisive fifth team point at #4. Su defeated Orozco by scores of 6-4, 6-3. Gerger and Fields were each up a set at #1 and #2, respectively, while Bondy lost the opening set at #3 as all three went unfinished.
Gerger and Fields will compete later in the week in the NCAA Division III Singles Championship at the same site. The brackets will be announced on Tuesday evening with action beginning Thursday morning.
