In a battle of top-10 nationally-ranked opponents, the eighth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team fell to #1 Williams by a score of 7-2 in a NESCAC match played outdoors on Middlebury's Proctor Tennis Courts. The Panthers (7-4, 2-1) will have a week off before they return to the court next Saturday on the road at 10th-ranked Bowdoin beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The Ephs (11-0, 1-0) grabbed all three points in doubles play. The region's third-ranked duo of Maria Pylypiv and Julia Cancio earned an 8-2 win over the eighth-ranked tandem of Ria Gerger and Lily Bondy. The second point came from Williams' Rebecca Curran and Maya Hart with an 8-3 victory against Lauren Amos and Alexandra Fields at #3, while the Ephs' Linda Shin and Juli Raventos were victorious at #2 by an 8-4 score over Jennifer Sundstrom and Kaysee Orozco.
In singles, Gerger was the first to finish and ran her winning streak as an individual to five, fighting back from a set down to earn a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Pylypiv in a matchup of two of the region's top-five players. Cancio gave Williams a 4-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Margot Marchese at #5, while Raventos clinched the fifth and decisive point for the Ephs via a 7-5, 6-2 win in the second spot over Fields.
Middlebury's other point came from Katie Paradies at #6, as she earned a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 triumph against Maria Gancayco. Williams concluded the match with a victory from Shin over Bondy at #3 by scores of 2-6, 6-4, 12-10, and in the fourth spot as Curran defeated Orozco via tallies of 5-7, 6-1, 10-5.
