The ninth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team concluded its spring trip to California with an impressive 6-3 victory over #7 Pomona-Pitzer at the Pauley Tennis Complex in Claremont, California. The Panthers end their trip with a 5-3 record having played a nationally-ranked opponent in all five matches out west. Middlebury returns to the court next Saturday with a match at Hamilton beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The Panthers secured a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles. The tandem of Kaysee Orozco and Jennifer Sundstrom were the first off the court at #2 with an 8-3 win over Shivani Doraiswami and Emily Chen. The Sagehens tied the match at 1-1 as Maryann Zhao and Maddie Gordon posted an 8-3 victory in the third spot over Lauren Amos and Alexandra Fields. Middlebury's Ria Gerger and Lily Bondy, the northeast region's eighth-ranked tandem, gave the Panthers a lead headed to singles with an 8-3 victory over Lea Lynn Yen and Grace Hruska, the second-ranked duo in the west.
In singles, Middlebury took control of the match with straight-set wins from the top-three flights. Featuring a matchup of regionally-ranked foes at #1, ninth-ranked Gerger edged past third-ranked Yen by a 7-5, 6-2 score. Fields was the next to finish with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Dorasiwami in the second flight, while Bondy clinched the decisive fifth team point with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Zhao at #3.
Hruska gave the hosts their second team point with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Orozco at #4. Katie Paradies completed the scoring for Middlebury with a 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 win over Chen at #6, while Kuo earned a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win in the last match off the court over Margot Marchese at #5.
