The Middlebury women's tennis team, who moved up one spot to ninth in the ITA's national poll released Thursday, was victorious over #15 University of Chicago by a 6-3 score during its spring break trip to California at the Claremont Club. The Panthers (4-3) have a day off before completing their trip to the west coast Saturday with a match against seventh-ranked Pomona-Pitzer at 1:00 p.m.
The Maroons (6-7) secured a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles. Chicago's Tiffany Chen and Courtney Warren were the first off the court at #2 with an 8-2 win over Kaysee Orozco and Jennifer Sundstrom. The Panthers tied the match at 1-1 as Lily Bondy and Ria Gerger posted an 8-3 victory in the top spot over Ariana Iranpour and Megan Tang. Chicago's Sruthi Ramaswami and Lucy Tang recorded an 8-5 win over Middlebury's Lauren Amos and Alexandra Fields.
In singles, Middlebury took control of the match with five-straight wins. Gerger grabbed the first set (6-1) and the first game in set two during the top flight against Iranpour before the Chicago player retired. At #3, Bondy was next off the court and gave the Panthers a lead they wouldn't surrender with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Chen.
Fields cruised at #2 over Megan Tang (6-3, 6-1), Margot Marchese scored the decisive team point in a 7-5, 6-1 win over Stephanie Lee in the fifth flight and Orozco completed the run of individual victories for Middlebury thanks to a 7-5, 6-1 victory at #4 over Jasmine Lee.
The Maroons tallied their lone point in singles at #6 with a 6-4, 6-4 win from Lucy Tang over Katie Paradies.
