The Middlebury women's tennis team, ranked #10 nationally, opened up its spring season with a pair of road victories over Skidmore and Rensselaer on Saturday. The Panthers opened with an 8-1 win over the 20th-ranked Thoroughbreds, before blanking Rensselaer 9-0. Middlebury will open its spring home schedule with a 1:00 p.m. match on Sunday against #26 Brandeis.
Against Skidmore, Middlebury notched all three points during doubles play. The No. 2 tandem of Kaysee Orozco and Jennifer Sundstrom made quick work of their opponents, posting an 8-2 victory. The Panther team of Alexandra Fields and Lauren Amos cruised 8-3 in the third flight, while the top pair of Ria Gerger and Lily Bondy needed some extra play, but pulled out a 9-7 victory.
In singles, Fields breezed by her opponent at No. 2, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win. Orozco kept things rolling at #3 singles with a 7-5, 6-1 win, while Bondy eased to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at #4. Gerger was a 6-1, 6-4 winner at No. 1, while Skidmore tallied its lone point with a win in the fifth spot. Katie Paradies completed the scoring with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph at No. 6.
In the match against Rensselaer, the Panthers surrendered just six games in the trio of doubles wins. Orozco and Sundstrom won 8-5 at No. 1, Amos and Fields posted an 8-1 victory at No. 2 and Sadie Shackelford and Paradies blanked their opponents in the third flight.
Middlebury recorded straight-set wins in each of the individual matches. Gerger was victorious at No. 1 (6-4, 6-2), Orozco won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 and Paradies completed the top half of the lineup with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 3. Shannon Gibbs was impressive in her lone match of the day, recording a 6-0, 6-2 win in the fourth spot, while Shackelford (7-6 (7-1), 6-1) and Amos (6-0, 6-1) concluded the scoring in the final two slots.
With the pair of wins, head coach Mike Morgan recorded his 100th coaching victory in dual matches at the helm of the Panthers. Morgan is in his ninth season and sits with a record of 100-51.
