Box Score Castleton's Hannah Rose scored a power-play goal 3:18 into overtime to lift the 10th-ranked Spartans (9-1-1) to 3-2 win over fifth-ranked Middlebury (4-2-1) in a game played in Kenyon Arena. The win was the first for the Spartans against the Panthers in just four all-time meetings. Middlebury is idle until January 5 when it entertains Lake Forest, while Castleton returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Connecticut College at 3:00 p.m.
Middlebury took a 1-0 lead just 3:50 into the game when Kelly Sherman scored her third of the year, finishing off a loose puck just outside the crease. Castleton had a pair of power play opportunities in the first period, but could not capitalize. The period ended with the Panthers holding a 12-5 shots advantage.
In the second session, Middlebury's Maddie Winslow made a pair of great moves 2:40 into the period, but was denied by Spartan goaltender Jess Cameron.
Middlebury took a 2-1 lead at the 9:51 mark with a power-play goal. Sherman fed Victoria Laven at the point, before her shot was tipped in down low by Anna Van Kula for her second of the season.
Castleton made it a one-goal game with just 28 seconds left in the second period when Taylor Steadman scored her seventh goal of the year. Aimee Briand fished the puck out of the corner before sending it to the far side, where Steadman one-timed it into the back of the net.
The Spartans controlled much of the third period, holding a 12-3 shots advantage. Middlebury's best chance came on a three-on-none break when Janka Hlinka was denied by Cameron. Castleton nearly tied the game just over five minutes into the period, but Steadman could not get a good angle on an open net down low. Middlebury killed off a Castleton power play at the 13:54 mark, maintaining its one-goal lead.
With Cameron pulled in favor of an extra attacker, the Spartans tied the game with only 3.5 seconds remaining. Rose's shot from the point was saved before Anna Daniels pounced on the rebound for her second of the year, forcing the game into overtime.
Castleton went on the power play 1:53 into the extra session, ending the game 1:25 later. The game-winner came on an innocent shot from the left point by Rose, but it slipped past Middlebury's screened netminder Julia Neuburger.
Middlebury held a slim 27-24 shots advantage in the game, with Cameron making 25 stops and Neuburger earning 21.
