Box Score Middlebury battled back late, but could not overcome St. Lawrence as the Panthers fell to 0-2 with a 63-57 loss to the Saints (1-3) at the WNY Knee and Orthopedic Surgery Tournament hosted by Medaille College. The Panthers return to action on Tuesday night at New Paltz.
With the game tied at 10-10, St. Lawrence slowly extended its lead over a six-minute span, taking a 23-14 advantage with 5:37 left in the first half. Middlebury answered with an 8-0 run, coming within one at 23-22 at the 3:43 mark on a hoop from Jack Daly.
The Saints closed out the first half on a 10-0 run of their own to stretch the lead back to 11 points (33-22).
Trailing by 14, a 9-0 spurt, sparked by five points from Matt St. Amour, brought Middlebury within five at 38-33 with 14:15 remaining. The lead remained in single digits with the Panthers making it a one-point game when St. Amour hit a three with 34 seconds left to play.
St. Lawrence's Willie Zachery went 4-4 down the stretch from the line, as the Saints held on for the 63-57 win.
St. Amour finished with a team-high 15 points and was selected to the all-tournament team, while Jake Brown scored a dozen with five assists. Matt Daley netted 11 points with six rebounds, while Connor Huff finished with a game-high 12 boards.
Kyle Edwards led all scorers with 17 points, while Kyle Kobis added 11 for the Saints.
The Panthers connected on just 5-26 shots from long range, while the Saints knocked down 18-22 free throws.
