A 17-3 run early in the second half helped Amherst defeat the Middlebury men's basketball team by a 79-64 margin on Friday inside Pepin Gymnasium.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers answered a 5-0 opening by the Mammoths with seven unanswered points, capped by a driving finish from Evan Flaks, to nab a two-point edge through 4:09 of action.
- Amherst tallied 10 of the ensuing 12 points, establishing a 15-9 advantage at the 11:31 mark. Zane Adnan connected from beyond the arc to punctuate the push.
- Dominick Ducree sparked an 8-0 response, headlined by a successful four-point play and layup before Flaks dropped in a turnaround jumper to retake the lead (17-15) at the 7:54 mark.
- Chris Hammond logged each of the Mammoths' next four baskets, scoring nine points across an 11-4 jolt that opened up a 26-21 margin favoring the visitors with 5:04 left in the session.
- A Kuba Cwalina three-pointer and a pair of charity tosses from Justin Fuerbacher restored the deadlock (26-26) with 16:05 played.
- Nate Pabis and Sherron Woodberry manufactured a 7-0 run over the final 3:31, setting a 33-26 score through 20 minutes.
- Amherst grabbed the momentum early in the second stanza, embarking on a 17-3 surge spanning nearly six minutes that widened the margin to 50-29. Hammond led the team with six points on a pair of three-pointers.
- Middlebury made three of its next four looks from the field and added two free throws to claim eight of the next 10 and trim the deficit to 15 (52-37) with 11:18 remaining. Four Panthers tallied two points each in the spurt.
- The Mammoths scored the next seven points before an 11-3 parry by the navy and white set up a 62-48 score through 13:26 of the half.
- The hosts pulled within nine with 2:33 left, but Amherst netted nine of the final 12 to wrap up the 79-64 decision.
NOTES
- Murray posted an all-around effort with 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a career-high three steals, leading the team in each of the four categories.
- The programs met for the 79th installment of the all-time series.
Middlebury concludes the regular season on Saturday, hosting Hamilton at 3:00 p.m. The team will honor its senior class before the contest.
