Box Score Middlebury scored two goals in each half on its way to a 4-0 NESCAC victory over Colby (3-4-1, 0-4-1) Saturday on Dragone Field as part of Middlebury's Family Weekend. The Panthers (3-3-1, 2-2-1) return to action Monday night with a rescheduled game at Keene State at 6:30 p.m., while Colby visits the University of New England on Tuesday 7:30 p.m.
Middlebury looked to get on the board first in the third minute. Adrianna Gildner received a pass from Grace Woroch on the left side, blasting a shot from 12 yards that Mule goalkeeper Ashley Conley turned away. The rebound came to Amy Martin, but her attempt was also saved on a diving stop to her right by Conley.
The Panthers scored the eventual game-winning tally at 13:55. Gildner chased down a ball on the right side of the Colby net, dribbled toward the middle and sent a ball to Woroch. After a pair of dribbles, Woroch laced a shot into the top-left corner from 12 yards away.
The score remained a 1-0 edge for Middlebury until just before the halftime break. With 31 seconds showing on the clock, Martin gained possession in the right corner and sent a cross into the box. The ball found the feet of Katherine Hobbs, who settled it and knocked it in past Colby goalie Sarah Evans.
Out of the halftime intermission, Middlebury kept the pressure up, peppering shots at the Colby goal. The Panthers increased their lead to 3-0 at 64:26 when Jamie Soroka ripped a shot from 25 yards away that tucked inside the far post. Just over eight minutes later, Hannah Robinson sent a nifty low cross into the box that Gildner tapped in on the far post for a 4-0 Middlebury lead.
The Mules nearly scored a minute later, but Elizabeth Barry's knuckling kick from 30 yards away with the wind was saved by Middlebury goalie Emily Eslinger.
The Panthers concluded the match with a 24-5 advantage in shots as well as a narrow 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Eslinger finished with four saves to earn the win and her first shutout this fall and sixth of her career, while Evans made 10 stops for the Mules.
