Women's Soccer Earns Third-Straight Draw

Box Score

The Middlebury women's soccer team earned its third-consecutive draw Sunday with a 2-2 tie on the road at Wesleyan. The Panthers (3-3-4, 2-2-3) return to the pitch with a match on Thursday at Castleton at 7:00 p.m.

Middlebury  jumped on the scoreboard 4:19 into the game on a goal by Adrianna Gildner, who blasted a shot from the left 20 yards out that tucked inside the right post. It was Gildner's team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The Panthers were forced to change goalkeepers a little more than 10 minutes later when starter Kate Reinmuth was injured and replaced by Emily Eslinger.

The Cardinals (5-4-2, 2-2-2) tied it at 15:53 thanks to Madeline Keane's score. Keane took a shot off a corner by Carly Swenson that was blocked by a defender in front. The rebound came right back to Keane, and she ripped it past a diving Eslinger.

The score remained tied at 1-1 until the 41st minute. Middlebury's Katherine Hobbs roped a shot from 20 yards out that tucked in under the crossbar for her third of the season, giving the visitors a 2-1 halftime edge. Wesleyan outshot the Panthers in the first half by a 10-4 count and induced all four corner kicks.

A majority of the play in the second half was in the midfield. The Cardinals managed to tie it at 78:22 on the second goal of the season by Sarah Sylla. She scored on a corner kick, as the shot appeared as if was going to trickle through the Middlebury goal mouth, but curled inside the right post at the last second.

Sylla nearly ended it with 30 seconds left in regulation, as her low shot from five yards out was smothered by Eslinger.

Neither team scored in the overtime periods, but the Cardinals made a furious run in the final minute of the second extra period with a pair of corner kicks, the second of which ticked off the left post and went out of bounds to end the match.

Wesleyan outshot Middlebury 15-12, and held an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks. Reinmuth was credited with two stops in 14:01 of action, while Eslinger also tallied a pair of saves. Meghan Hanan notched five saves for Wesleyan.
